ECDA Certification Levels We Screen For
Every educator deployed in a Singapore preschool must hold the right ECDA certification for the age group they teach. Before we shortlist anyone, we check their current certification level against your role. Based on ECDA’s published guidelines:
- L2 – can teach Kindergarten, Nursery, Pre-Nursery and Playgroup (18 months to 6 years old).
- L2 Conditional (L2C) – same deployment as L2, valid for 2 years while the educator works towards the required language grade (a B4 in GCE ‘O’ Level, or an accepted alternative). If it is not met in time, the level is adjusted to L1.
- L1 – can teach Nursery, Pre-Nursery and Playgroup (18 months to 4 years old).
- EY1 / EY2 – certification for infant and toddler educators working with younger children in infant care and early years programmes.
Certification rules are set by ECDA and may be updated. We always confirm a candidate’s certification against ECDA’s latest requirements, and recommend centres do the same before deployment.

What ECDA certification does a preschool teacher need in Singapore?
It depends on the age group. Based on ECDA’s guidelines, L2-certified teachers can teach Kindergarten, Nursery, Pre-Nursery and Playgroup (18 months to 6 years old), while L1-certified teachers can teach Nursery, Pre-Nursery and Playgroup (18 months to 4 years old).
